Corbett Haselgrove Spurin was educated at the Polytechnic
of Wales (LLB) and University of Wales College, Cardiff (LLM) and he was Senior
Lecturer in Law in the University of Glamorgan Law School since 1989. In the
field of law and in the areas of arbitration and adjudication law in particular,
his name stands out as a pioneer, a unique legal mind whose contribution to
the discipline and profession was extraordinary across a long career that
was nevertheless tragically cut short with his untimely death in December
of last year. An inspirational lecturer to many generations of law students,
Corbett was a much valued colleague, friend and highly respected legal scholar.
Corbett Spurin was instrumental in leading the setting up of the LLM in Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) for which the University of Glamorgan was awarded
fellowship accreditation (six years ago) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
(CI Arb), one of only about 4 universities to have been given such an accolade.
He also provided valuable assistance to the University in the Faculty of Advanced
Technology in helping to secure RICS accreditation.
Corbett was a highly respected expert across the world and his own dedicated
adjudication law reports were quoted by High Court judges, who, it would appear,
were relying on the weekly updates and summaries that Corbett was producing.
Corbett prided himself on being up to date and never more than a week behind
the delivery of new adjudication judgments. The rich abundance of his scholarly
work in the field of alternative dispute resolution is noteworthy and adorns,
amongst many others, the annals of the National Academy of Dispute Resolution
(www.nadr.co.uk) and is illustration of the breadth and depth of his legal
endeavour and erudition which is a lasting and living testimony to a much
missed colleague to so many.
